We decided to have the nurse feed him on the 2:30 shift so that we could sleep a little bit more, cause both of us are dying, and our best hope at getting him home asap is if Rachel’s milk comes in. And she needs better sleep for that to happen.
The other two feeding times went very normally. We’ve gotten into a really good rhythm with it. His feeding tube has been getting him all the nutrients that he needs and he’s been more perky and awake recently.
11:30 am
We’re starting to take things in alternates so that we both can get some more sleep (which Rachel especially needs for her milk to come through). Becky came and went with Rachel for the 11:30 feeding while I slept. Then Maelynn brought Leo and Calli by to see Rachel, which was a lot of fun.
2:30 pm
We were both awake and alert so we went together to the NICU for his feeding. He didn’t take to breast feeding, so we did the gavage again, and got to hold him close. It was good that we were both there cause the NP on shift came through on rounds and talked us through the timeline of everything. Peter’s looking really good, he just still isn’t eating great, and the protocol for them there requires him to be eating well enough orally to sustain his blood sugar levels before they send him home with us. The big concern being there, that if there’s any doubt at all about his feeding, they won’t let him go, cause if he happens to relapse into refusing meals, and his blood sugar drops, we can’t admit him back to the NICU, if that happens, we’d have to take him up to primary’s which everyone (including us) wants to avoid. So because of that his feeding protocol is looking like his stay there will stretch out through the end of this week most likely.
5:30 pm / 8:30 pm
The big win this afternoon is that Rachel got like 15ml pumping! That’s enough for like a quarter of a full feeding for Rocky, and it’s only going to get better from here!
Rocky only ate ~15ml from the bottle this evening when I went to feed him while Rachel slept. He promptly threw probably half of that back up. So we just put the rest through his feeding tube.
